Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, signs that identify permanent rooms and spaces need raised characters and braille and must be mounted in specific locations. Getting these details wrong can mean replacing signs after an inspection.
Signs that identify permanent rooms and spaces — restrooms, room numbers, stairwells, exits — need tactile characters and braille. Directional and informational signs have their own requirements for character size and contrast, but don’t need braille.
