Building signs we make

Your name on the building, done right.

Your building sign is the one piece of marketing every customer sees. It has to be readable from the parking lot and the road, meet your landlord’s sign criteria and still look good after years of Midwest weather.

Front-lit channel letters

Individual fabricated letters with LED lighting behind translucent acrylic faces — bright, readable and the most common choice for retail and restaurants.

Halo-lit (reverse) letters

Solid-faced letters that light the wall behind them for a softer glow. A popular choice for professional offices and upscale storefronts.

Dimensional letters & logos

Non-illuminated cut aluminum, acrylic or PVC letters that add depth without electrical work.

Lightboxes & cabinet signs

Single or double-sided illuminated cabinets with replaceable faces — practical when tenants or branding change.

Fascia & awning signs

Panels and awning graphics sized to fit your storefront band and your landlord’s requirements.

Window lettering

Hours, services and logos on the glass to finish the storefront and catch foot traffic.

Storefront sign guide

Choosing the right storefront sign

Most shopping centers and many towns in Lake and McHenry County have sign criteria that set what’s allowed on a building: letter height, lighting type, colors and mounting style. We start there, then design the most visible sign the rules allow.

Questions to answer first

  • What does your lease allow? Many leases include sign criteria from the landlord. We’ll review it and get landlord approval on the drawing before fabrication.
  • Raceway or direct mount? Letters can mount on a raceway (a slim box that holds the wiring) or directly to the wall. Raceways mean fewer wall penetrations and are often required by landlords.
  • Front-lit, halo-lit or both? Front-lit letters are the most readable at night; halo-lit letters read as more refined. Some letters combine both.
  • How far away are your customers? A storefront seen from a busy road needs larger letters than one facing a sidewalk.
  • Is there power at the sign band? Illuminated signs need an electrical circuit at the wall. We’ll tell you what’s needed before install day.

What affects your price

  • Letter height and count. Channel letters are priced largely by size and number of letters, so a short name costs less than a long one.
  • Illumination type. Halo-lit and combination-lit letters take more fabrication than standard front-lit letters.
  • Mounting and access. Height of the sign band, wall material and whether a bucket truck or lift is needed.
  • Logo complexity. Detailed logos may be built as a lightbox or dimensional piece instead of individual letters.
  • Permits and approvals. Permit fees and any engineered drawings your municipality requires.

Storefront sign questions, answered

What are channel letters?

Channel letters are individually fabricated letters, usually aluminum with acrylic faces, mounted to the building and lit from inside with LEDs. They’re the standard building sign for retail centers, restaurants and offices because each letter can be read clearly day and night.

Do I need a permit for a storefront sign?

In most municipalities, yes — permanent exterior signs usually require a sign permit, and many shopping centers also require landlord approval. We prepare the drawings and handle both.

Can you reuse my existing sign cabinet?

Often, yes. If your current lightbox is in good shape, a new printed or vinyl face is a fast, low-cost update. We’ll inspect it and tell you honestly whether a new face or a new sign makes more sense.

Do LED signs cost much to run?

Modern LED modules use far less power than the neon and fluorescent tubes in older signs, and they last longer between service calls.

Do you also do signs at the road?

Yes — see our monument and pylon signs for freestanding property signs that work with your building sign.

Can you repair or relight an existing sign?

Yes. We service existing signs, including LED retrofits for older neon or fluorescent signs, replacing damaged faces and repairing lighting.
